Performance Squads

Sources of players for the Performance Squads

  • High Performance Squad players will mainly be sourced from the Emerging Squads.

  • Emerging squad players will mainly be sourced from the Raw Squads.

  • Raw squad players will mainly be sourced from schools or junior clubs.

Selection for the Performance Squads

Selection for the High Performance Squads, Emerging Performance Squads and Raw Performance Squads training is by:

  • Completion of a “gifted identification” tool Player Profile LITE 2014 indicating an overall rating of GREEN

  • Liaison between the player, senior club, parent (where relevant), an Emerging Squad coach, the High Performance Squad coach and an independent party.

  • Successful completion of a 16 week confirmation period, evaluating:

Training Commitment

  • Players on the Emerging Performance Squads are expected to complete 138 training hours per year as part of the Programme.

  • Players on the HP Squad are expected to complete a minimum of 192 training hours per year as part of the Programme.

  • Players on the Raw Performance Squads are expected to complete 72 training hours per year as part of the Programme

Competition Commitment

  • Players on the High Performance Squad will be expected to compete in tournaments as agreed with the High Performance Coach.

  • Players on the Raw Performance Squads will be expected to compete in tournaments as agreed with the Talent ID and Development Officer

  • Players on the Emerging Performance Squads will be expected to compete in tournaments as agreed with the Talent ID and Development Officer.

Evaluation

All players will be expected to adhere to the Player Agreement.


High Performance Squad players will be evaluated using the Player Profile Tool every 12 months. Using a RAG system, the following outcomes are possible:

  • Red – move into club

  • Amber – retain in squad possible removal from Squad at next review

  • Green – retain in squad

  • Green – nomination for the GB/Irish Performance Programmes


Emerging Squad players will be evaluated using the Player Profile Tool every 12 months. Using a RAG system, the following outcomes are possible:

  • Red – move into club

  • Amber – retain in squad possible removal from Squad at next review

  • Green – retain in squad

  • Green – move up to High Performance


Raw Squad players will be evaluated using the Player Profile Tool every 12 months. Using a RAG system, the following outcomes are possible:

  • Red – move into club

  • Amber – retain in squad possible removal from Squad at next review

  • Green – retain in squad

  • Green – move up to Emerging

Player Profile Tool

A player’s influence on the training environment (i.e. what added value does the player give to the training environment) will be taken into account when making an overall rating of a player for a Performance Squad.

All players will receive feedback indicating their strengths and potential development areas.

Irish/Great Britain WCP Programmes

At this level, subject to meeting the entry criteria, players can choose either the Irish or Great Britain High Performance route

Players with a British Passport are eligible for the GB World Class Performance Programme or the Ireland World Class Performance Programme

Players with an Irish Passport are only eligible for the Ireland World Class Performance Programme

Players must meet the required standards set by the Programmes:

In addition to these Programmes where players must move to the National Centre, players from Ulster can also train as part of the Talent programmes in either system. This is considered to be added training opportunity on top of their Ulster Performance Squad. Players must meet the criteria stated:
