    Northumberland Masters Silver

A number of Ulster and Irish players travelled to Northumberland to compete in the 2018 Northumberland Masters Silver with Christen Graham, Ian Young, Cathy Warrener and George Joseph all coming away victorious!

In the XD over 50 Ian Young and Cathy Warrener came away with the Gold medal after an extremely tight Round Robin event topping the group only on Points. Having beaten the top Seeds for the event 21-12, 21-16 in their first match they lost out to the second seeds in a very tight game 21-23 in the 3rd Games. They bounced back in the next game against fellow Ulster player Nelson McDowell and Christine Eddy in another 3 setter this time a lot less closer 21-13 3rd set. With 3 pairs all having one 2 matches and lost 1 left the Group very close making the placings going down to the number of games won/lost. Again the pairings of Young/Warrener and McDowell/Eddy were tied on 5-3. Making the placings going down to points to separate the top 2 spots and it was Young & Warrener coming out on top with a points total of 164-137 compared to McDowell/Eddys count of 147-149. Some great matches within the group and may going to 3 sets so well down to Ian and Cathy on their Gold medal!

First Donegore’s Christine Graham had a great weekend in the Over 60’s event winning the Mixed Doubles and a Silver in the Ladies Doubles. She partnered George Joseph in the mixed event and having topped their group winning all 3 matches progressed to the final were they faced Malcom Grayson & Barbara Ann Davidson. George & Christine took the first set 21-19 but the English pair really pushed in the second set and was very close up to the later stages of the game but it was Christine & George who played great in the crucial points taking the game 24-22 and the Over 60’s Mixed title.

In the combined age groups of Over 55 & 60’s Ladies Doubles Christine teamed up with Doreen McClements. After winning their first group match against the 2nd Seeds 21-19, 21-12 they managed to win their second match of the group in a thrilling game against Baker/Hurst from England, 22-20 in the 3rd set. Unfortunately they lost out to the top seeds of Armer/Eyles but came second in the group with 2 great wins. Well done especially competing against the age group down in the 55’s.

A number of other Ulster players competed across other age groups but unfortunately they didn’t progress to the latter stages of the events. For follow results of the event click here.
