Ulster U13 & U17 Open
The Ulster U13 & U17 Open took place on 15th-16th September at Lisburn Racquets Club with Matthew Cheung having a great weekend taking home 3 titles in the U17 Event.
Emerging Performance Squad Player Matthew was Top seed in the Boys Singles and had a safe passage through to the final after wins over Scott Guildea & Christopher O'Donoghue in the Quarter Finals and Semi finals respectively. In the final he faced his Doubles partner Vincent Pontanosa who defeated the 2nd seed, David Downey, en route to the final. Matthew continued his good form from the earlier rounds in the final and took the title 21-15, 21-16.
In the Boys Doubles Matthew & Vincent were seeded 2nd and after a walkover in the first round beat Donovan/Downey in the Semi final 21-7, 21-11 to process to the final. They faced Guildea/Lawlor in the final after the pair overcame the top seeds in the Semi final in 3 tight sets. The first set of the final was quite tight all the way to the latter stages of the set. Matthew & Vincent then won a quick run of points to take the set 21-17. The second set was not as competitive with Matthew & Vincent maintain a high level of play and went on to take the set 21-12 and the doubles title.
In the Mixed Doubles Matthew teamed up with Sophia Noble, who earlier in the day won the girls singles title, and were seeded 1 for the event. Win's over O'Donoghue/ O'Reilly & Lawlor/Flynn in the Quarter final & Semi final lead the pair to the final, were they faced Downey/Ward. Downey/Ward had a great Semi final match against Pontanosa/Fox winning 22-20 in the 3rd set. Unfortunately the pair came up a confident Matthew & Sophia in the final in which they won 21-10, 21-14.
Laura Comer had a great girls Doubles event teaming up with Fiona McAdams. The pair won a tight semi final against the top Seeds of Fox/Ward 21-18, 21-19 and followed it up with a marathon win in the final against the second seeds of Noble/O'Reily 15-21, 21-14, 21-18 to claim the title!
The U13 Event was ran over 1 day on Saturday 15th September with Christopher Chee coming through a great semi final in the boys singles against 2nd seed Darragh Murtagh 21-19, 21-18 to make the final. There he faced Top seed Senan O'Rourke and Christopher continued his great play taking the title 22-24, 21-18, 21-11.
