Great Britain Badminton are pleased to announce the appointment of new Chair Mark Burgess. A former professional badminton player with a World Ranking high of 35, Mark has had an extensive Career in sport working for Badminton England, Pro-Active West London and Swim England, where he rose to become their Head of Delivery,  Head of Sport at Brunel University &  his current Role as Head of Sport and Wellness at King’s College London.

“The Olympics and Paralympics are the pinnacles of our sport and it is a tremendous honour to be entrusted with this role,” says Burgess. “They are the four-yearly events where badminton is on the global stage and in everyone’s homes, so trying to support, add value and challenge in that area is a really exciting prospect.”

GB Badminton is responsible for the World Class Performance Programme (WCPP) in Paralympic and Olympic Badminton, where players from Badminton England, Badminton Scotland, Badminton Wales and Ulster Badminton come together to compete as Team GB.

Burgess places a strong emphasis on collaboration between these four bodies as being the key to success.

“I would love to see how I can support and bring people together to share best practice,” said Burgess.

Burgess will be replacing Stephen Baddeley in the role, following an 8 year tenure. Baddeley was one of England’s most successful men’s singles players, winning European and Commonwealth titles while gaining 143 caps for his country.

Ulster Badminton welcomes the appointment of Mark and is highly supportive on further collaboration between the four Home Bodies. Ulster Badminton have a strong representation within GB Badminton, Executive Manager & CWG Coach Andrew Stewart is a Director on the GB Board and also sits on the Olympic Technical Advisory Group, while Ulster Badminton's Pathways Officer & former Para Performance coach Leslie Dewart also sits on the Para Technical Advisory Group.

We look forward to working closely with GB Badminton as an organisation, and to help the next generation of Olympic & Paralympic Athletes.
