    Craig Stuart

    Craig Stuart – Born 21ST May, 1952 - Died 22nd May 2024.

It is with sadness I give the news of the passing of Craig. He was a life long member of Newtownbreda Presbyterian Badminton Club. He played for over 60 years and was a fine player.

Most of his playing career was in the Presbyterian League, were he played with distinction in the top division. He was a left handed badminton player but a right handed golfer. Craig had a great short serve. He started with the forehand but on seeing this new backhand technique he developed it. When I asked him about it he said, “ I practised it all summer in the garden, so that when the season started, I could use it to good effect.”

We played doubles and enjoyed many matches together. Opposition players thought they would be able to rush his short serve, only to find their return in the net. They resorted to lifting, only to find a smash reigning down. Then it was time for his famous flick serve. Oh what a beauty!

He was a member of the Northern Bank team and often played with John Scott, beating many more favourable partnerships. He also went on the famous ( maybe infamous ) Presbyterian Badminton Tours to the West of Scotland. I have a feeling there may have been a few high jinx but not Craig of course!!

Over many years he was the Match Secretary of the Presbyterian League. He organised it in an efficient, no fuss manner. It was actually still going this last season. Since he retired Craig, Barbara, Stephen and I have been running the Junior Badminton Club. He was fun, interested in the young players, used his banking skills and always encouraged us all in the love of our wonderful game. One of the parents on hearing of his passing described him as “ a gentleman.” No finer tribute!

He loved all sports but Badminton was close to his heart. Those of us who knew him have lost a great friend but rejoice in that we could call him that. He is now with his maker! Please remember his wife Barbara, Ian, Linda and Heather in your thoughts and prayers. RIP MY FRIEND.
