FZ FORZA U19 Irish Open 2023

Matthew Cheung put in an excellent display at the Forza Irish Open 2023 to win the Boys Singles title. Paige Woods also had a great event winning a Silver medal in the Girls Singles with partner Michelle Shochan.

The Junior International Series event was held at the NIA, Dublin 1st-3rd September with a number of nations competing across the 5 events.

Matthew Cheung was seeded 2 for the boys singles and his performances in the early rounds justified the seeding after 2 good wins against Scotland & Estonian Players. In the Quarter Final he played the 8th seed from France, Gaspard Delabrosse. Matthew maintained his high level throughout and progressed to the Semi Final with a 21-15, 21-14 win. The Semi Final matches was against the strong Portugueses player Santiago Batalha. It was a close match throughout with Matthew coming out on top 21-19, 21-18 against the 4th seed. In the Final he played the Malaysian Lee Tao Ong, who was unseeded but had a number of impressive wins in the earlier rounds. Matthew played an excellent match in the final, maintaining control throughout both games to win it 21-14, 21-13.

In the Girls Doubles Emerging Performance Squad Player Paige Woods had a great tournament with partner Michelle Shochan, with a number of hard fought wins to progress to the Final. Their opening match was a 3 set game against Portugal/Ireland part of Wilkinson & Woods with Paige & Michelle taking it 21-9 in the 3rd game. An impressive Quarter Final Win against the Top seeds from Estonia, 21-19, 21-15 seen them progress to the Semi Finals. Bastide & Laurent from France were their opponents  &  after a comfortable opening game for the Irish pair, 21-9, the French fought back to take the second 21-17. The Irish pair then flip the Score on the French pair in the deciding set to win 21-17 & progress to the final. The Final was a match up against the Scottish pair of Chan & McAllister. A great opening set by the Irish pair seen them take it 22-20. The Scottish pair fought back in the remaining 2 sets and took both 21-13, 21-17. Overall a great event for the young Irish Pair to win a silver medal.

There were a number of other Ulster players competing over all the events with some encouraging performances against International Opponents. A great start to the Badminton Season for the young Players.

Great to have an underage International Event held in Ireland & exposure to International players. Thanks to Badminton Ireland to organising.
