    Good Relations Programme

The Good Relations Programme used badminton and good relations learning as a tool to engage with young people within our schools sessions, festivals, holiday camps and community badminton programmes.

This programme ran across 4 different council areas, which include Belfast, Lisburn, Derry and Coleraine. Within these council areas we targeted several areas of GR needs, which include traditional PUL and CNR areas in Lisburn, Coleraine, Belfast and Derry.

The Good Relations Programme involved young people aged 8-11, male and female. We targeted those from Coleraine, both Ballysally and Castlerock areas, which include (PUL, CNR and mixed areas). Those in Derry, Waterside and Cityside areas. In Lisburn, we targeted Carryduff, Dundonald and Ballybeen estate. Children from Belfast from CNR and PNL backgrounds who have had limited opportunities to connect with other young people across Belfast. The participants involved were young people who have all came from high social needs areas and with limited good relations learning.

The Good Relations Programme has enabled us to address good relations needs and being involved in these areas has allowed us to target schools that had little to no experience in good relations programmes and assist in their further understanding of exploring identity, cultural diversity and friendship making. The programme also gave the pupils an opportunity to gain knowledge on different communities, which helped many children gain more confidence in meeting new people and reaching out to people from different backgrounds. The participants involved had the chance to learn more about their class, exploring each of their likes, dislikes and common interests. Learning about people from different backgrounds and how their identity and culture is different, gave the children insight into how everyone can have things in common.

Overall, we were able to see throughout the whole programme, we identified that involving badminton sessions, good relations learning, festivals, holiday camps and community outreach programmes, this had a positive impact on all individuals involved. Observing the programme taught us that everyone really engaged with the activities. We hope that the children involved will take on the lessons they have learned and continue to engage with people from different communities and backgrounds.
