    Portuguese Junior International 2021

The Portuguese Junior International 2021 took place in Caldas da Rainha, Portugal from 3rd-5th December with a selected U19 Irish team competing in the Individual event. Consisting of 8 players, Ulster had 2 players selected within the team, Matthew Cheung & Laura Comer.

Ireland's Sophia Noble had a great Portuguese Junior International Event, defeating the 2nd seed from Estonia en route to the final. In the final she faced the 8th seed from Thailand and despite taking a close second game 21-19 to force a decider the Thai player went on to take the 3rd game 21-10. Am impressive performance from Sophia at a Junior IS level.

Emerging Performance Squad player Matthew Cheung had a great run in the Boys singles reaching the quarter finals defeating Spanish, Estonian and Danish opponents en route. Playing the 6th seed from Belgium in the QF, the first set was very tight with the Belgium player edging it 25-23. Taking momentum from the first set he went on to take the second set 21-8. Overall a good performance from Matthew playing in an older age group.

Laura Comer, also an Emerging Performance Squad player, had a number of competitive matches across the disciplines, winning her first singles match in a tough 3 sets against Estonia, before putting in a good performance against the 5th Seed from Portugal but losing out in 2 sets. Matthew & Laura teamed up for the Mixed doubles and another tight game ensued but they lost out to Spanish opponents 21-16, 25-23.

Scott Guildea & Vincent Pontanosa had a good run in the Boys Doubles reaching the Quarter Finals but lost out to a strong German Pair 21-12, 21-15.

Well done to all the team putting in some great performances.
