Irish National's A, D, G Grade
The Irish Nationals for Grades A, D & G took place on the 23rd/24th February 2019 with 3 titles going to Ulster players in the A Grade while Jack Armstrong reached the final of the D Grade Men's Singles with the finals to take place at the FZ Forza Irish Graded Finals on 18th May at the National Indoor Arena in Dublin. The Grades A & D were held at Baldoyle Badminton Centre, whilst the Grade G event was held at Marino Institute of Education.
Donegal's Ian MacBeth and Carland Badminton Club's Tracey Watson won the mixed doubles in the A Grade event while Alpha duo Conor Hickland & Scott Burnside won the A Grade Men's Doubles.
The new partnership of Ian & Tracey overcame Callum Thomas & Shauna Kenneally in the Semi final in two close sets 21-19, 21-18 to reach the final where they played Declan Bennet & Jennifer Lalor. Ian & Tracey took the first set 21-17 but the Dublin/Galway pair came back in the second set to sneak it 21-19. Ian and Tracey rediscovered their form in the 3rd set to take it 21-12 and the A Grade mixed title.
Scott & Conor claimed the A Grade Men's Doubles title in another 3 set final. Facing Carlow's LTC John Amond & Lakewoods BC Brian O'Mahony in the final the Ulster Pair got off to a great start taking the opening set 21-15. The second set was a different story with John & Brian coming back strong to take it 21-13 and force a deciding set. It was close to the final stages of the set but Scott & Conor played the final few points very well and took the set 21-17.
Tracey Watson also reached the final of the A Grade Women's Doubles with Greenwell Street BC Ciara Nelson winning a marathon semi final 22-20 in the 3rd game to reach the final. Unfortunately they came up just short in the final against the top seeds Orla Flynn & Viki Pesti losing 21-15, 21-12.
Jack Armstrong also reached the final of the D grade Men's singles with the final to be held on 18th May at the Graded Finals day. It was a big draw (64) in the D Grade Singles with Jack winning his first 3 rounds to reach the semi final. There he played Galway LTC's David Comer and jack played a great two sets winning 21-11, 21-17 to reach the final. He will face Templemore's Conor Byrne in the final....Best of Luck for the 18th May!
