The Branch

The Ulster Branch Badminton Union of Ireland Ltd. has been in existence since 1911.

It is a region of Badminton Ireland (Badminton Union of Ireland Ltd., a company limited by Guarantee and not having a share capital), the governing body of the sport in Ireland.

It represents the nine counties of Ulster, which includes Cavan, Donegal and Monaghan, and is the governing body for the sport within the confines of Northern Ireland.

It is semi autonomous working within the terms of the Memorandum and Articles of Association of Badminton Ireland Ltd., with a wide remit to actively promote and encourage badminton development in Ulster from grass roots to the highest playing level.

Its motto is "Badminton for All" and attracts people of all ages, sex, denomination, creed, colour, able and disabled. It exercises no limits through economic status, fitness and athletic ability.

The Game

Badminton is played worldwide and is an Olympic sport.

It is the fastest racquet sport in the world.

It is enjoyed socially and competitively by all ages from seven to seventy (plus!).

It is also one of the largest amateur participation sports in the Province.

Management and Staff

The Branch is managed by a Council of not less than ten and not more than twenty members.

It consists of -

(1) Officers of the Branch (7)

(2) One nominee from the Schools' Association.

(3) Children's Officer

(4) Up to 11 other members, proposed and seconded, and elected at the Annual General Meeting.

The Council’s responsibility focuses on the medium to long-term policies and aspirations of the Branch. The short-term and day-to-day administrative concerns are the responsibility of the Management Group, which is appointed by the Council.

The Branch employs two full time and one part time paid members of staff:

High Performance Coach - with overall responsibility for the development of elite players and management of coaches involved with the different Ulster Squads and Regional Development Squads.

Participation Officer - responsible for implementing development programmes within the Branch structure and establishing outside links with Educational,

Council and other bodies to development the sport in the wider community.

Administrative Officer - responsible for the management of the Branch's administrative functions.

Other posts are filled by volunteers.

Development

In pursuit of its remit to actively promote and encourage badminton development from grass roots to the highest playing level, the Branch:

Works with local councils and primary schools to give young people a taste for the game at an early age. For further information go to 'Teams, Leagues, etc.'

Runs courses to train coaches from Introductory Level, to Level 3, which qualifies coaching up to international standard. These coaches are available to clubs and individuals. For further information go to 'Coaching'

Identifies and develops talented players through individual and squad training. For further information go to  'Coaching'

Runs courses to implement current 'Working with Children and Vulnerable Adults' legislation. For further information go to 'Teams, Leagues, etc.

Runs competitions and tournaments for teams and individuals. See calendar for details of programme. Full information and entry forms are available for each event as it becomes due. For further information go to 'Events'.

Operates 'Juvenile Clubs' to promote the game in areas where it is not widely played. For further information go to 'Teams, Leagues, etc.

Operates a Pan Disability Club in Lisburn and works with local councils elsewhere to promote the game amongst the disabled. For further information go to 'Teams, Leagues, etc.
